Happy Mother’s Day 2018

Happy Mother’s Day 2018

Every year on the second Sunday in May, Canadians across the country celebrate Mother’s Day, and that means this year it falls on Sunday May 13th. Mark your calendar.

A Floral Tribute

Did you know that carnations are the official symbol of Mother’s Day? White carnations are meant to honor the memory of deceased mothers while red and pink carnations honor those who are living. Why not consider giving mom a bouquet of meaningful carnation flowers for Mother’s Day this year?

Who is She?

For most people, Mother’s Day is that special day when they make an extra effort to show appreciation not only for the woman who brought them into the world – their mother – but also for the other mother figures in their lives—present and past. Like mothers-in-law, sisters who are moms, aunts, grandmothers, stepmoms – and perhaps even to celebrate women who have taken on a nurturing role in their personal lives and are totally unrelated to themselves. A teacher or mentor perhaps?

Along with the family-related aspects of the day, Mother’s Day is also a time when people may want to reflect on the meaning and role of motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in our society.

Make Her Day Even More Meaningful – Raise Some Awareness

Apart from showering mom with the usual cards and gifts, brunches and lunches, why not get involved at a grassroots level and do something completely different this year in honour of your mother or a mother figure in your life? You could join in on a fundraising event or make a donation, aimed especially towards women, motherhood and mothering.

Consider a cause that can help those women who are less fortunate—like supporting a shelter for abused women such as Toronto’s Interval House, Victoria Women's Transition House Society, or Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre — to name but a few.

Mother’s Day here in Canada, as well as around the globe, also plays host to many fundraising events where your contribution and participation is greatly valued. For example:

Walk or Run… It Doesn’t Matter, Just Do It!

Why not join one of the many 2018 Mother’s Day walks near you? Check out the Breast Cancer Society of Canada’s list of walks in or near your hometown, and help raise funds for the women in your life on May 13th — all for a very good cause. More information is available at their website. The Canadian Cancer Society also lists a number of local events on their website, where you might find something near you.
